“Water Lilies” by Claude Monet
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting.
Water Lilies is not a name of a single painting, but the name of a series of works of approximately 250 oil paintings.
The paintings depict his flower garden at his home in Giverny, and were the main focus of his artistic production during the last thirty years of his life. Monet planted the water lilies before he painted them. Monet organized his property at Giverny as if it were one giant painting. In all of the “Water Lilies” paintings, Monet focuses on the surface of the water. He refrains from any depiction of the land or the sky, showing only their reflection in the water.
Typical of these paintings are the willows, which can only be seen as a reflection.
The sky with its white clouds is reflected in the water, so that the blue of the sky and the blue of the water are one.
Only the presence of the water lilies helps the viewer understand that it is a reflection.
