The Fulfilment – part of the Stoclet Frieze – Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) – Handmade in Austria – wood from sustainable cultivation
The Stoclet Frieze is a series of three mosaics commissioned by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt for the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, Belgium, in 1905-1911. The panels depict a swirling tree of life, a standing female figure and a couple embracing – The Fulfilment.
“Fulfilment” shows a pair of lovers in a close embrace. Once again, one thinks of the Beethoven frieze in the Secession or Klimt’s “Kiss” in the Belvedere, the man is shown from behind. This allows Klimt to depict the woman’s face, her closed eyes and her devotion. As in the “Kiss” already mentioned, Klimt uses different patterns to express masculinity and femininity: The woman wears a floral dress and the man a powerful cape with geometric shapes, ovals and rectangles. No doubt the habit is reminiscent of Klimt’s own painter’s smock. The evening sun makes the “Fulfilment” sparkle.
