SMILEY – we all love him. But did you know… Handmade in Austria – wood from sustainable cultivation
As early as the 19th century there were typographic gimmicks with faces in newspaper printing. In 1938 Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote that simply drawn facial expressions enabled more flexible and varied descriptions than just adjectives. A noseless variant of the smiley, drawn by American commercial artist Harvey Ball, became popular in the 1960s. In December 1963 he drew two dots and a curved line in a circle on a piece of yellow paper. Ball’s client was a company that wanted to improve the working atmosphere with the pins. Ball was paid $45 for the design.
