Gustav Klimt
The Kiss, originally entitled The Lovers, is one of Gustav Klimt’s most important works and also one of the most important works of Art Nouveau painting. It is also considered to be the painter’s best-known painting, as it was widely disseminated through reproductions in many different forms. Klimt painted the picture in the first half of 1908 and completed it in 1909, a period that is referred to as Klimt’s golden phase and from which his most popular works originate. It was purchased at the 1908 Vienna Art Exhibition by the then Imperial and Royal Ministry of Culture and Education (the minister was Gustav Marchet) for the large sum of 25,000 crowns and given to the Neue Galerie (now the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere), which was established in 1903 in Prince Eugene of Savoy’s summer palace on Rennweg, where it is still on display today.
